As a member of the Highland Park Borough Council, Matthew Hersh chairs the Borough's Health and Human Services Committee and serves as Council liaison to the Highland Park Housing Authority, Highland Park Board of Health, Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs, Human Relations Commission, and more. A former community newspaper reporter and editor covering New Jersey state and local government, Matthew now works as a strategic communications consultant with several nonprofit organizations throughout New Jersey. He previously served as senior editor at Shelterforce Magazine, a publication of the National Housing Institute, which focuses on federal, state, and local affordable housing policy as well as community development and community organizing.
Mr. Hersh currently serves on the Citizen Campaign's City Storytellers Council as well as Sustainable Jersey's Civic Engagement Task Force. Both entities exist to engage communities by way of storytelling, citizen journalism and promoting open, transparent government by way of easily accessible public information. He has also served on the Borough's Housing Commission and is a trustee on the Highland Park Educational Foundation, which makes small grants to the Highland Park Public Schools. He is also a former committee member on the Highland Park Democratic Municipal Committee.
